Major Watson patented this in 1893 and it was normally available in .455 calibre for the Webley revolvers of the late 19th century. However, there were models which would take other calibres and, indeed, this particular model will take both .455 and .45 Colt. A tremendous piece of Victorian engineering. They originally cost 10s 6d. In 1902, they were largely superceded by the Prideaux speed loader, of much lighter construction in spring steel, which cost only 4s 6d. Major Watson died in the Boer War in 1900, killed in action. Perhaps only a few thousand of these pieces were ever made. The lining of the case has a tinned mild steel finish; the leather would appear to be a light tan calf. Its condition is superb: all the stitching intact and the steel elements nice and bright. |
