This extremely rare mace head would appear to be of wrought iron or, just possibly, cast iron (see David Nicolle's excellent book 'Arms and Armour of the Crusading Era 1050-1350: Islam, Eastern Europe and Asia'). Only since the opening up of the Eastern bloc (c 1990), have these weapons started to drift into the West. It weighs 400g and measures about 3.5" across at the widest point. It would originally have been mounted on a wooden shaft, perhaps some 18" long. The mud has now been washed off the piece, exposing old patches of red rust which would indicate that the piece had been wrapped in rags before being stored or buried. The overall rust, however, would be relatively easy to clean off, should this be required, but I think part of its charm and history is to leave it as it is. |
