Title Mace head
Nationality Russian
Period 12/13th century
Sold

This extremely rare mace head would appear to be of wrought iron or, just possibly, cast iron (see David Nicolle's excellent book 'Arms and Armour of the Crusading Era 1050-1350: Islam, Eastern Europe and Asia'). Only since the opening up of the Eastern bloc (c 1990), have these weapons started to drift into the West.

It weighs 400g and measures about 3.5" across at the widest point. It would originally have been mounted on a wooden shaft, perhaps some 18" long. The mud has now been washed off the piece, exposing old patches of red rust which would indicate that the piece had been wrapped in rags before being stored or buried. The overall rust, however, would be relatively easy to clean off, should this be required, but I think part of its charm and history is to leave it as it is.

The day the blunderbuss arrives I could not stop looking and feeling the gun for at least one hour. My wife told me that I was sick........ I am very happy, it is a piece of craftsmanship! Well made! I have 5 blunderbusses but all iron barrel, also from England but this one is gorgeous with the Brass Barrel.

Please keep me informed when you have any other type of blunderbuss. Thanks my friend!
