Title Long Lee-Enfield rifle bayonet, 1888 Mk2
Nationality British
Period 1899-1903
Sold

This was designed to be used with the first smokeless powder magazine rifle of the British army, which replaced the black powder Lee-Metford just in time for the Boer War 1899-1902. The L-M version is easily distinguished from this by having a slot drilled in the hilt to accommodate the cleaning rod.

This is an Enfield arsenal product, with an issue stamp for 1900 and VR under a crown stamped above. Total production was less than half the Lee-Metford version, as the latter was still good for use on the new rifle.

Both sides of the blade have suffered from poor storage. The bottom mount has been crudely re-secured to the scabbard and is somewhat bruised. All the mounts are lightly patinated and the obverse grip is a little bruised.

testimonials

Just a brief note to confirm that the sabre has been delivered today. All is as it should be. I have to say I’m impressed with the ‘custom’ packaging, obviously essential in your line of business. I have made a very quick inspection of the sword & it fully lives up to your accurate description, very pleased with the purchase.
