This bayonet is the bayonet for the Lee-Metford rifle of 1888, used extensively in the Boer War in .303 calibre, initially as a black powder weapon. The blade is faintly marked with a VR and crown and dated 1891; the top of the scabbard has an issue date for September 1900. The scabbard is a bit on the scruffy side, the bottom mount having several crunch marks from being shut in doors or whatever, and the leather seam is now open at the reverse. This apart, the weapon is in relatively good condition apart from a small bruise to the grip and a few spots of minor surface rust to the blade. |
