The 5th Army fighting on the Isonzo front (Italian mountain district) had these little tin badges made by local workshops for the drivers in their transport units, who had a very perilous time getting supplies and ammunition up to the front line. Typically these badges were sold to raise money for the widows and orphans of the relevant units and were normally worn on the left-hand side of the Austrian field cap. Sometimes as many as six were worn all together. The two little tin pins have been broken off the back of the badge, otherwise it remains in reasonable shape with the 5th Army workshop mark clearly punched on the reverse. |
