This rare bayonet was issued to the German troops in SW Africa and is regimentally marked on the hilt. The blade and scabbard have much of their original factory finish, with all the original government inspection stamps throughout and the blade is dated 1912 at the forte. This bayonet can be found in three formats: with a leather grip (as here); with a wood grip (usually European issue for machine gun crews); and with a hard rubber grip (typically for issue in the German Pacific islands). This example was made at Erfurt, the Saxon arsenal, and would fit the Gewehr 98. There is some age wear to the obverse leather grip. There is very little wear on the blade, although there is some minor finger marking, and the saw teeth are in nice shape. The scabbard has most of its original blue finish and the crossguard is stamped K.S.4543. |
