There are good pre-war photos showing this in use, viz the Graf Spee's world cruise, for instance. U-boat crews would always wear these at formal events such as the Indienstellung (commissioning) of their boat, reverting to the schiffchen (fore and aft cap) for regular service use. This (just over 5cm wingspan) was worn on both the winter (navy blue) and summer (white top) navy cap, copied, of course, from our own Royal Navy! The pin, fitted at the back for insertion in the cap, has lost two-thirds of its length. There is no cockade, which would have been attached separately to the cap. It would appear to be made of die-struck gilt aluminium and is in excellent condition, apart from the broken pin, with a tiny amount of wear to the highlights on the chest of the eagle.
