There are good pre-war photos showing this in use, viz the Graf Spee's world cruise, for instance. U-boat crews would always wear these at formal events like the Indienstellung (commissioning) of their boat, reverting to the schiffchen (fore and aft cap) for regular service use.
This was worn on both the winter (navy blue) and summer (white top) navy cap, copied of course from our own Royal Navy! There was a two-inch pin fitted at the back for insertion in the cap; sadly this has been lost. Nevertheless, a hard to find badge.
