These oval badges were worn by NCOs and denoted their particular professional skill, in this case a helmsman. It would have been worn on the upper left arm.
It is machine embroidered yellow (perhaps a cotton/rayon mix as it has a sheen to it) on a navy blue wool broadcloth ground, with a cotton backing to the top and rayon mesh for the rest. It measures nearly 9cm long and is in ex-stores condition.
