These oval badges were worn by NCOs and denoted their particular professional skill, in this case a flak machine gunner with three years' experience, signified by the double chevron. The machine gunner in question would probably have operated a 20cm flak cannon, which was the standard flak machine gun of the German Wehrmacht in WW2. The badge would have been worn on the upper left arm. It is machine embroidered red (perhaps a cotton/rayon mix as it has a sheen to it) on a navy blue cotton twill ground, with a rayon mesh backing. It measures just over 8.5cm long and is in ex-stores condition. The badge has not been trimmed flat at the bottom; it has simply folded over. |
