These oval badges were worn by NCOs and denoted their particular professional skill, in this case a range finder. This would have been an artillery NCO, who would have been responsible for gauging the distance of a given target (in order to set the fuse on the shell). It would have been worn on the upper left arm. All ship-borne gunnery seamen, together with electro mechanics, minelayers and divers, wore these badges in red on navy blue. Most other proficiency badges were yellow on navy blue. The design is machine embroidered in red cotton on a navy blue wool broadcloth ground. The backing would appear to be rayon mesh. Its condition is ex-stores. |
