Title Kindjhal or Quarma, Georgian or Armenian
Nationality Russian
Period c 1860
Sold

This kindjhal comes from the border region in the Caucasus mountains, could be of Turkish or Russian origin. This was the classic mountaineer's knife, still carried in these regions on special occasions, the more regular weapon now being an AK47! The hilt is brass mounted with a nice, fat fighting grip made of buffalo horn.

The grip has had some restoration with a resin-based filler replacing old woodworm damage. The blade is 16.5 inches long with a gold poincon on either side, almost certainly the maker's mark. It appears to consist of a crown over a three-headed serpent (a hydra, perhaps?), see detail photos. The scabbard is in reasonable order for its age, wood with a leather covering and brass mounts.
