Title Khyber knife
Nationality Afghan
Period c 1890
Sold

This is the classic Afghan assassin's knife and the smallest (roughly about one foot long) of the varieties, which varied in size up to two foot. It is the real McCoy, a souvenir from the North-West Frontier Wars in which the British were engaged at this period. This type of knife is still carried by Afghans.

The best part of the piece is the horn grip which has piquet work in pewter and copper. The scabbard is certainly original, although the leather is a little on the frail side. It has a very scruffy blade, pitted along its length, which could improve substantially with careful cleaning.

Good news, my friend, the boot knife has arrived safe and sound. This example will more than fill my collection need.

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!
