This was probably produced in 1918 or in the early years of the Weimar Republic. It celebrates the service of the unit in three major European wars: 1871 Franco-Prussian; 1866 Six Weeks War against Austria; WW1 1914-18. It would have been awarded to the veterans and widows of the Corps. The service dates 1866-1918 probably reflect the raising and subsequent disbanding of the IX Army Corps rather than any individual man's service. It consisted of the 17th & 18th Divisions from Schwerin and Flensburg respectively (Western Baltic coast). It served as part of General von Kluck's First Army, memorably fighting at Mons 23/24 September 1914 against the British Expeditionary Force. Apart from a short spell in Russia, near Vilna, all service was in France and Flanders. It is a die-struck gilt medal (30mm diameter), in near EF condition. |
