This is a good example of an early stirrup from the mid-16th century. It was found on the outskirts of Edinburgh some years ago and is, in all probability, of either German or perhaps Austrian origin. The motifs are largely of the shell variety, typical of this period on ironwork like sword hilts and other horse furniture. The piece is made from a lap weld construction. The ring for the stirrup leather has opened on the weld and there may have been a rivet holding this element in place, which is now missing. However, its overall condition for a piece well over 400 years old, is pretty good! The internal ironwork has a russet finish and the exterior has been carefully cleaned at some stage. |
