This type of spur would have been worn in the Crusader armies in the early Middle Ages. They were only superceded when the new style Gothic spurs appeared, with much longer shanks and the introduction of rowels in the 14th century. This measures 9 cm at the instep and is only lightly corroded in parts. The rust has been consolidated and, apart from two corroded patches, is in exellent condition. Having said all that, I am fairly certain that this was a ground find. |
