This type of spur would have been worn in the Crusader armies in the early Middle Ages. They were really only superceded when the new style Gothic spurs appeared, with much longer shanks and the introduction of rowels in the 14th century. This measures 9 cm across at the instep. Although heavily corroded and consolidated throughout (it is is a ground find), this has all its original form, with the added bonus of the original buckle for the strap, somewhat battered perhaps, but not often encountered on early pieces. |
