This is a reasonably nice example of the spadroons that emerged in use at the end of the American revolutionary wars. There is a clear pre-1801 royal arms engraved on one side of the blade. Typically, these were carried by infantry officers in the British army right through to about 1800 when the 1796 pattern replaced them. The scabbard has its original leather, which has been damaged in places and very carefully restored. The ivory grip is in excellent shape with a little patination, but no serious chips or bruising. The blade has all its original engraving, although there is no maker's mark. The iron scabbard mounts are original. It is getting increasingly hard to find swords of this age with their original scabbards. |
