The Iron Cross was instituted in 1813 for the campaign against Napoleon. At the start of the Great War, the 1914 version was created as it had been for the war of 1870 against France. This grade was normally given to officers and sergeants in the Great War. Adolf Hitler got one as a runner in the trenches. On the reverse, it is maker-marked 'CD' with a silver grade '800'. The paint is largely intact and the silver rims could do with a thorough clean, but I have left it like it is with the option for the collector. |
