This fine horn shows a strong European influence, principally Scottish, in the manner in which the flutes are carved the length of the piece and the evidence of Celtic strapwork. It might date to the early years of the 18th century and is almost certainly buffalo horn. It is from Barakat in Sumatra. It is missing its base plate and the stopper at the nozzle, but generally it is in excellent shape for its age with an appealing patina to the horn and no splits or obvious damage. |
