This rather splendid red enamelled silver-plated base metal cross, mounted on its original silk ribbon, was awarded by the Red Cross in the Hansa cities (Bremen, Lubeck, Hamburg, Danzig, etc). The Hanseatic league was founded in the Middle Ages as a trading organisation to protect the commercial interests of these cities. This cross is a reminder of just how powerful this league once was. I've not yet managed to find an example of this cross in any of my reference books, but, from the construction and the mark on the reverse 'GODET U.SOHN' (Godet & Son), a famous Berlin maker, I have no doubt as to its origins. The overall condition is excellent, especially the enamel; however, there has been some loss to the EPNS finish on the base metal frame of the cross. |
