This half-litre stein is 26.5 cm high and has a fairly minimal amount of overpainting on the transfer work, but sufficient to convince one, together with the patina of the pewter and the wear on the base, of its early 20th-century origins. The owner's name, 'Gef.[reiter] Sauer' (Corporal Sauer) is painted on it. Unusually, but maybe this reflects Bavarian practice, there is no list of his company buddies on the reverse of the stein. These lists were normally placed either side of the handle on Prussian examples. There is a lithophane of a naked lady in the base. The condition is excellent throughout (no star cracks to the base). |
