Title Gras bayonet
Nationality French
Period 1877
Sold

This is the bayonet for the 1874 model single shot bolt action rifle which replaced the Chassepot of 1866, in turn rendered obsolete by the arrival of the Kropatsheck tube magazine rifle in 1877 (both the later rifles used an 11mm brass cartridge).

The blade is engraved 'Mfre. D'armes de St. Etienne Mai 1877' and has most of the factory finish. The cross guard number is a mismatch with the scabbard. The grips have much of their original varnish with a little oil staining. The iron hilt elements have some light scattered patination, as does the scabbard. Perhaps 20/30% of the factory blue remains on the latter.

My order arrived this morning, thanks for the prompt delivery.

Two excellent original pieces, I must say.

Buckle is in minty condition retaining so much detail esp plummage on eagle's neck and chest, like to see those 'creases' on the legs also... a beautiful example of an early O&C buckle.

Belt is very interesting, rather thin, CROUPON stamped and also behind the tongue...maybe Allegmeine but no SS markings as you state. Beautiful piece none the less.

Thanks for a speedy transaction Chris, I am very happy with my purchase :)

Just a brief note to confirm that the sabre has been delivered today. All is as it should be. I have to say I’m impressed with the ‘custom’ packaging, obviously essential in your line of business. I have made a very quick inspection of the sword & it fully lives up to your accurate description, very pleased with the purchase.
