Title Gottscho bayonet, G98
Nationality German
Period 1915
Sold

This bayonet was designed by Dr Lucien Gottscho of Berlin in November 1914, patented by him and supplied in limited numbers to Bavarians and Wurttembergers. It is unusual, inasmuch as, unlike the rest of the G/K98 series which have a TO slot, it has a square form slot for the cleaning rod.

The pommel is brazed in two pieces, the only example of this construction in the entire selection of G/K98 Mauser bayonets.

The grip is a nice fruitwood example with a couple of minor age splits and a middling patch of scarring in the centre of the obverse grip, perhaps from a piece of shrapnel. There are a couple of minor dings in the pommel, where typically it has been used to hammer in nails or some such. The blade is in magnificent condition. Alas, the scabbard is substantially creased and dented throughout its length on both sides, but at least it is the original scabbard with traces of what could well be the original black paint.

These rarely turn up on the English market today.

testimonials

Just to let you know that the bayonets arrived safely this morning and I am extremely happy! They are everything that I had hoped they would be, but better! I am extremely pleased that i purchased them from you. The 1867 Albini ... is an absolute beauty, the blade is immaculate. The other is in fact in far better condition that I had imagined as well. So all in all, I couldn't be happier! Many thanks Chris.

I very much look forward to doing business with you again in the near future.
