This design, introduced in 1896, mirrors the issue badge, but in a silver as opposed to white brass finish. The crown is the king's pattern, hence the dating, although these officer's badges were produced up to 1940 or so. This has had a hard life! The original fittings (blades) have been removed and replaced with a lead soldered brass lapel crescent, probably done by its veteran owner to wear in civvies after the war. Thus I suspect that this is an officer's bronze field service badge that has been heavily silver plated, evidenced from the bronze core showing on the remains of the blades. |
