Title Duelling rapier
Nationality British
Period c 1640
Sold

This is a plain example of the duelling rapier. These swords were not for everyday wear, but were specifically made for fighting. The German blade (32.5 inches) is pierced throughout for the first 12 inches or so of the forte and is double-edged. There is a Solingen maker's mark in the form of a cross.

The grip has been rewired and the blade has lost some of its length, which originally was probably nearer 38/40 inches. There may have been some old restoration to the arms of the hilt and possibly the knuckle bow, hence the price.
