Title Cromwellian lobster pot helmet
Nationality British
Period c 1643
Sold

English Civil War period dragoon's helmet, traditionally worn with a buff coat and breast and back plate. The classic three bar nasal face piece is always indicative of English manufacture. A relatively scarce find compared to the Dutch armourers' imports with the single nasal bar and fluted skulls.

The ear pieces on this two-piece skull have been re-affixed with fresh leather hinges on both sides, but this has been carefully done and the leather has been darkened to tone in with the patina on the helmet. There is one tiny hole, less than 1 mm wide and maybe 3 mm long, in the skull, otherwise it is in good shape for the age of the piece.
