Probably from the reign of Christian X (1870-1947) or possibly his son Frederick IX (1899-1972), this would have been worn by Danish diplomats and senior members of the royal court. The arms on the guard date back to Frederick VIII (1843-1912). It is a high quality item made by Wilkinson Sword of London, with their logo etched at the forte. The mounts are gilt bronze with mother of pearl grips. The design is a mid-19th century one, of French origin. Some 75% plus of the original gilding remains. The blade is the collichemard type (ie strengthened at the forte), an echo of 18th century design. The scabbard is black calf leather, in very good shape with slight wear to the top. |
