I suspect that, from the quality of the workmanship, this is an unmarked Parker Field cutlass. PF were the official armourers to the Metropolitan Police from formation in the early 1830s. These swords were issued for riot duty, convict escort and the prison service throughout the Victorian era. This, with iron mounts, is considerably rarer than the brass-mounted type. The blade measures 23.75" long and 1.25" wide at the forte. There are some minor nicks on the leading edge. The blade has virtually all its factory polish. It is now quite hard to find one as clean as this, as the external iron mounts are almost invariably rusty from long neglect. |
