This is a medal commemorating the reign of Leopold II, who, apart from being king of the Belgians, was also king of the independent state of the Congo. This is a memorial to a man whose reign in the Congo was infamous for its brutality and callousness where the native folk were concerned. It is finely struck in gilt bronze with a piece of original ribbon and what appears to be the original box. The condition of the medal is near EF and the ribbon is nice and clean, though the silk lining of the lid has frayed at the hinge, which is quite typical for a piece of this age. |
