This rare piece of harness is for the 1886 and 1904 pattern bayonet and is a copy of the German original which turns a Pioneer's pick scabbard into a double use item to carry the bayonet as well. There is a small punch mark (AE?) on the reverse of the belt strap and there are tin liners to both sides of the pick scabbard. The Pioneers represented approximately 10% of the men in each company, the rest somewhat less skilled men who would simply have carried an ordinary entrenching shovel. |
