This coin was probably minted to commemorate the arrival of the Federes from Brest and Marseilles at the end of July 1792. It was issued by Monneron Freres of Paris and was valid currency in the Departements of Paris, Rhone, Loire, Gard (as stamped on the edge) at the time of the French Revolution. According to the declaration on the reverse, this was exchangeable against a 50 Assignat note, the government currency based on forfeited church and aristo property. On the obverse (the side with the figures), there is the logo 'Pacte Federatif', which commemorates the days in July when the paramilitary units of the Revolution were entertained by the Paris sections. The date at the bottom (14 JUILLET 1790) is the first festival of the Federation. This is, I suspect, as much a political commemorative medal as an item of currency. It measures 40mm across. |
