This was made by Stevens of Maastricht (stamped at the forte) for the single-shot bolt-action Chassepot rifle adopted by the Belgian army in 1868. Not to be confused with the French model 1866 type - the leaf spring is longer and the press stud has a concave aspect. The scabbard is a mismatch, perhaps a French example. The blade measures just over 22" and is rather blunt at the point, with signs of stress and abuse. Having said all that, this is a comparatively rare bayonet, at least in the UK! The scabbard is a little scruffy, with old pitting stains and some minor bruising to the leading edge of the scabbard, the last 12" use anyway, possibly through heavy service use. |
