Title Chassepot bayonet
Nationality French
Period 1873
Sold

This has matching numbers to scabbard and hilt and a clean blade marked 'Mre d'Armes de St Etienne 1873'. This was the bayonet for the 1866 model bolt action rifle, the first in the French Army service, which saw extensive use in the Franco-Prussian war and later in France's colonial wars in Indo-China and Africa.

The scabbard has some minor surface rust, which has largely been hand cleaned off. There are extensive remains of the original blue finish.

testimonials

My order arrived this morning, thanks for the prompt delivery.

Two excellent original pieces, I must say.

Buckle is in minty condition retaining so much detail esp plummage on eagle's neck and chest, like to see those 'creases' on the legs also... a beautiful example of an early O&C buckle.

Belt is very interesting, rather thin, CROUPON stamped and also behind the tongue...maybe Allegmeine but no SS markings as you state. Beautiful piece none the less.

Thanks for a speedy transaction Chris, I am very happy with my purchase :)
