Title Cavalry trooper's sabre, 1899 pattern
Nationality British
Period c 1900
Sold

This Boer War period British sabre was made by Wilkinson. They are quite hard to find in good condition and this example has been carefully hand cleaned. There are issue marks for 1901 and 1907 and all original stamps on the scabbard and hilt are clearly visible. The leather grips are in excellent shape.

The 1899 pattern was followed by the 1908 one, a much more scientifically designed sword. In its day, the 1899 pattern was widely disliked by the troopers, as the grip was poorly designed and tended to slip in the hand. It was the last attempt by the British army to design a 'cut and thrust' sword; the 1908 pattern was purely designed for thrusting.
