This interesting bronze (7 inches high) is inscribed on the back: 'John Keate DD / Head Master of / Eton College / from 1809 to 1834'. (DD = Doctor of Divinity.) He was famously in charge of Eton at the time when Wellington described Waterloo as having been won on the playing fields of that establishment, and he died in 1852. Dr Keate was a small man (under 5 feet) and a stern disciplinarian, but at a time when the school was full of unruly elements. |
