Title Brighton police truncheon
Nationality British
Period c 1850
Sold

In 1838 the Brighton police force consisted of one chief officer, two superintendents, one night constable, three inspectors and 24 watchmen. The force was formed in May 1838 by the Town Commissioners, who were replaced by the Watch Committee in 1854 when Brighton became incorporated. In 1865 the total strength of the force was 100 men.

This is a good example of the relatively rare Brighton truncheons of this era. It is made of box wood and measures nearly 15.5" long. It replaced an earlier example, slightly longer, with the twin dolphins on a shield at the base.

The varnish over the shield at the base has clouded over somewhat. Apart from a few gouges to the centre of the crown, the paint is still in good shape.
