This box is of typical rolled or die struck brass; Dutch design, but could well have been made in Germany. It commemorates the year 1757, the year of victories for the Allies: Quebec and Plassy falling to the English and two big victories for the Prussians against Austria. Somewhat worn finish through extensive usage. 'Fredericus Magnus' is clearly marked between his portrait and the Prussian eagle on the base of the box. The scene on the lid refers to George II of England, Ferdinand of Brunswick, Frederick himself and his younger brother, Henry, who was also a competent general. There is a British royal coat of arms and the Prussian eagle also in evidence among these portraits. This year was certainly something to shout about for the Protestant cause in Europe. |
