Title Brass signal cannon
Nationality British
Period c 1840
Sold

This 15.5 inch brass-barrelled signal cannon has an iron carriage in the form of a winged dragon. There is an image of St George and the Dragon in a small circle on the breach and also the mark of the Tower Wharf proof house. The Tower authorities allowed the private proof of barrels for the London gun trade on payment of a fee.

The bore is just under 1 inch diameter and, on inspection with a light, has been carefully bored through with the touch hole drilled at a slight angle. In other words, this is a working cannon which could be used (only with black powder, of course).

Excellent information, Chris, you've been making a big effort! I will spell it out more closely (I'm a historian!) and don't think Bezdek can add much more.
