Title Bayonet for Mannlicher rifle, model 1895
Nationality Austrian
Period c 1895
Sold

This rather scruffy example has the Austrian double eagle on one side of the forte, along with the regimental mark of the 12th Infantry Regiment. On the other side, it has the mark OE above WG, being the mark of the Steyer munition factory. There are further unit and/or weapon serial numbers on the pommel.

The blade has medium pitting towards the point on both sides and the grip has the nice early peace-time fruitwood grips one associates with the earlier examples of this bayonet. The scabbard would have been of steel with an oblong frog hook.

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!
