Title Bavarian bayonet for Mauser rifle, 1871/84 model
Nationality German
Period c 1884
Sold

Originally for the 1869 model, Werder single action, falling block breech loader, in its day actually a better rifle than the model 1871 Mauser, a single shot bolt action weapon. It was shortened and modified for the Mauser rifle of 1871/84, the first magazine rifle of the German army, which carried a tube magazine under the barrel.

There are signs of sharpening to both faces of the blade and the guard is punched with Bavarian unit markings (see photos).

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!

Found the item a little on the expensive side and a bit disappointed that you were unwilling to bend a bit on the price of the Officer's Tunic Eagle (half the fun of buying, after all, is the haggling), but impressed by the speed of delivery and the quality of the item. Was well worth it in the long run...
