These are are a representative selection of SY troopers' buttons from the early 20th century. The two large tunic examples are marked 'Gaunt' and 'Jennens' respectively, the smaller buttons are unmarked, the tiny cap button being the rarest of the lot. The SY was first raised in 1794, disbanded in 1848 and later raised again in 1901. It amalgamated with the Sussex Yeomanry in 1922, forming two batteries of field guns as part of a four-battery unit, the 98th (Surrey & Sussex Yeomanry) Brigade, RFA. It served with distinction in both world wars. |
