This is a somewhat scruffy example of the classic Japanese bayonet, used in the Russo-Japanese War 1904-05 and in both world wars, made infamous by the Nanking massacre, the Burma railroad and the death march on Bataan. The forte is marked for the Nagoya arsenal. The blade, fullered on both sides, is 15.5" long and has been sharpened for combat. Scabbard and hilt iron have an even grey patina, darker on the hilt with a few patches of scattered deeper pitting. The wood grips have suffered from age and some abuse - hence the price! I normally get ?120 for a really clean one (without frog). |
