Title 88th Foot (Connaught Rangers) other ranks glengarry badge, skeleton pattern
Nationality British
Period c 1900
Sold

The 88th became the 1st Battalion of the Connaught Rangers in 1881, being raised in 1793 as this regiment and fighting with great distinction throughout the Peninsula War. This is a just-out-of-period copy of the 'skeleton' pattern, one of the two 88th badges, the other one having the ivy wreath.

The original of the badge would have been worn right through the Zulu War where the 88th saw service in 1879. The writhen affect on the numbers is to simulate an embroidered bullion badge (as worn by the officers).

This is die-struck brass with copper lugs and was manufactured by Messrs Fox & Co, circa 1900. It is accepted by most collectors as a perfectly representative specimen in view of the amazing scarcity of the original, hence the fake.

Sword arrived today. Fabulous. This is an excellent example of a fighting sword of its period, and a real gem. The 1828 Pattern is such a gorgeous sword, and this is a fine example. Even my bride is impressed and she doesn’t really get swords.
