Title 5th Royal Irish Lancers helmet plate
Nationality British
Period c 1902-22
Sold

The 5th RIL has an ancient lineage, dating back to 1689. They served as a lancer regiment from 1861-1920, being amalgamated with the 16th Lancers in 1922 on the partition of Ireland. In the 18th century they served as dragoons (ie mounted infantry) in the policing of Ireland. The king's crown dates it as being 1902 or later.

The Irish harp and crown were given to them by royal warrant of 1751 to be borne on the housings, holster caps and on the guidons of the 5th Royal Irish Dragoons. The design was authorised for the 5th RIL in 1858.

This is a die-struck gilding metal plate with braised posts that have hand-cut threads, not to be confused with cheap reproduction items.

My order arrived this morning, thanks for the prompt delivery.

Two excellent original pieces, I must say.

Buckle is in minty condition retaining so much detail esp plummage on eagle's neck and chest, like to see those 'creases' on the legs also... a beautiful example of an early O&C buckle.

Belt is very interesting, rather thin, CROUPON stamped and also behind the tongue...maybe Allegmeine but no SS markings as you state. Beautiful piece none the less.

Thanks for a speedy transaction Chris, I am very happy with my purchase :)
