This near EF medal was made by Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, a celebrated firm of London goldsmiths. It measures 43mm diameter and the design is by Narcisse. It was struck on the command of Lt Col Oglander for award to deserving other ranks in the regiment, typically to sergeants, but occasionally to privates. The ribbon would have been a 46mm broad red ribbon with 4mm yellow edges. At present I have put an eight-inch piece of cotton ribbon with it that is 40mm wide of approximately the same design. There is an example in the National Army Museum, Chelsea, London, and a full description and illustration in Major Balmer's book, 'Regular Army - British and Irish Regimental & Volunteer Medals, 1745-1895', Vol 1 (he never published the second volume). |
