This delightful little badge (3.5 x 2.2 cms) has to be one of the rarest of its genre. It represents a Prussian Grenadier in his mitre cap with his pigtail extending beyond the circlet. 26 Panzer Division was raised in Berlin, October 1942, serving at Anzio & Cassino 1943, and on the Adriatic coast in 1944 where it had a distinguished career. Heering-Husken in 'Katalog der Abzeichen deutscher Organisationen 1871-1945' (published in 1997), page 190, ref. 9832, attributes this badge to the 26 Panzer Division, which consisted of: 26th Panzer regiment; 9th & 67th Panzer Grenadiers; 93rd Panzer artillery regiment. The badge is made of pot metal, with little tin clips behind for attachment to the side or peak cap, depending on the wearer's preference. The condition is excellent for its age, though the pot metal now has a dark patinated finish, whereas it may originally have been somewhat brighter. |
