This is the classic German Flak shell, as used on the Flak Vierling (four-barrelled Flak cannon). It is dated 1944 and is maker coded 'aux'. The case is the belted variety, made of iron with a bronze lacquer, now somewhat faded and tarnished, but largely intact. The head has an aluminium contact fuse, which unscrews to reveal the cavity within the shell head for the high explosive charge. The shell head itself possesses 85%+ original paintwork, with manufacturer's details both impressed and painted on it. An interesting and unusual piece for the artillery shell collector. It is 20.5 cms (8.25 inches) long. |
