Title 1st model Lutwaffe sword by E & F Horster, Solingen
Nationality German
Period 1935-37
Sold

This is a good example of a first pattern sword, which could only be worn by officers and senior NCOs. It has the early nickel silver mounts throughout, together with most of the original EPNS finish. It was worn without a portepee on a lightweight baldric under the uniform jacket. The second pattern sword, with aluminium mounts, followed in 1938.)

The blade (just over 27") is in excellent shape, apart from a couple of small scuffs some 12" from the point. The blue leather grip has some light wear marks on both sides, in keeping with its age, and all the original wire. There is a Waffen Amt stamp just below the Horster logo.

Three (out of four) scabbard mount screws have been replaced. It is also possible that the scabbard leather has been replaced, but, if so, it has been expertly done. There is a slight but noticeable vice mark on both sides of the pommel. The leather hanger which connects the scabbard rings is missing. Hence the price!

testimonials

[From a vendor, rather than a buyer]

I'm delighted that you are happy with the badge and I hope you can sell it to someone who will value owning it.

I tried to sell it on eBay but they won't accept Nazi items. I then contacted several dealers via a Google search who mostly offered me £40-£50 after some haggling. Most of the other dealers tried to conceal its true value in their replies and also lacked manners which doesn't inspire confidence.

Ultimately it's about trust. I should think that most prospective sellers have done their own research and therefore know roughly what their item is worth. You were the only dealer who had the integrity to concede that my valuation was approximately correct and I respect your comment that you can't offer this as you need to make a profit. Your honest approach is greatly appreciated and I felt comfortable taking the risk in sending it to you.

Thank you for a smooth transaction

The bayonet arrived at 8.00 this morning! It's excellent, just what I was after and I'm well pleased with it!
